NGO Providing Family Assistance to Inmates

A lot of prisoners serving time in jails leave behind families or partners who look after their children. There are, however, many people who were single parents or the sole breadwinners for their dependents and as a result, their children or aging parents are left alone to fend for themselves.

There is usually nothing given by the state to such households, so life becomes difficult for both the prisoner and their family. In such cases, various human rights activists and NGOs take an active stand to provide for such families. The Siddhartha Vashishta Charitable Trust is one such example of an organization involved in taking care of prisoners’ families while they are serving their term.

Run by Manu Sharma, this NGO helps the children of prisoners, especially when it comes to providing for their school, stationary, books and other supplies, and helps arrange children’s admission in different schools across Delhi. Moreover, the Manu Sharma NGO provides medical care and assistance to the families of inmates as it believes the family should not be held responsible for the mistakes made by one person.

The NGO also helps the families of prisoners get jobs such as a security guard and other labor positions through which they can support themselves. The NGO’s representatives visit different jails and help those in need. These services are not restricted to any particular prison either.
